Let me set the scene. Somewhere in an alternate America, Congress has passed the strangest law you can imagine: unmarried people get exactly one night per year for premarital sex. One. That’s it. If you think that sounds absurd, you’re right. It’s completely bonkers. But here’s the interesting thing about One Night Only — the moment you stop questioning the logic and just go along for the ride, the movie grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go.

Director Will Gluck knows exactly what he’s doing. He takes what could have been a silly, flimsy premise and builds something warm, funny, and genuinely swoon-worthy around it. It’s clear he understands rom-com rhythm in his bones, and it shows in every scene.

A lot of that comes down to the leads. And, boy, do they make a handsome pair. Callum Turner is striking — his looks are charming. There’s a moment early on where he turns and looks at the camera, and I swear I heard someone behind me sigh out loud. He has that effortless charm that pulls you in. And in what feels like a first for the genre, it’s Turner who provides the skin-baring moment, not his female co-star.

Then there’s Monica Barbaro — stunning doesn’t quite cover it. She’s radiant, sharp, and impossibly likable. Whether she’s cracking a joke or quietly falling apart, she pulls your eyes to her. She plays her role with a warmth that feels genuine, not forced.

The supporting cast keeps pace beautifully, with no one left simply filling space. Molly Ringwald shines as Turner’s mother, bringing effortless warmth to every scene. Watching her work is a genuine treat, a nod to rom-com royalty that feels well-earned rather than gimmicky. LeVar Burton also makes a delightful surprise appearance as her boyfriend.

I saw this at a packed advance screening, and I’ve honestly never been part of an audience so invested. People leaned forward, laughing and sharing smiles. During the big romantic moments, people were encouraging the characters to— “Go for it!” and “Do it!” — more than once. I’m not exaggerating. Everyone was loudly rooting for the characters like they were old friends.

So, my advice? Go see One Night Only. Be prepared to laugh at the absurd premise and stay for the heart underneath. It’s a feel-good crowd-pleaser that knows exactly what it wants to be: funny, sweet, gorgeous to look at, and impossible not to root for. And when the credits rolled, the audience didn’t get up and leave — they clapped. Genuinely, warmly, enthusiastically — they clapped.

If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about how good this film is, I don’t know what will. When One Night Only arrives on August 7, 2026, do yourself a favor and go see it.
