Finding Emily is a charming British romantic comedy that hits all the right notes without trying to be anything more than a good time. Made by Working Title Films and directed by Alicia MacDonald, it’s a light, enjoyable movie that keeps things simple yet engaging from start to finish.

The story follows Owen, a 23-year-old sound engineer working at a university bar in Manchester. One night, he meets a girl, exchanges numbers, and the next day, he texts her — only to discover she gave him the wrong digits. Not willing to give up, Owen teams up with Emily Raine, a psychology student who has her own reasons for helping him out. What ensues is a series of hilarious mishaps that quickly spiral out of control, involving podcasts, viral fame, and an amusing parade of women named Emily.

The plot is simple and easy to understand, even predictable, yet the experience is enjoyable. Angourie Rice, as Emily, comes across as charming, with her dry humor and subtle intellect. Spike Fearn, playing Owen, is just as appealing — slightly awkward, sincere, and hard not to root for. Their chemistry feels organic, producing interactions that are authentic and heartfelt.

Minnie Driver brings charm to her supporting role as the university dean, making every scene she’s in memorable. The rest of the cast fill out the world nicely, adding depth and humor, with a fun cameo from The Blossoms near the film’s end that’s sure to bring a smile. Morgan Kibby’s score complements the film’s playful tone, and the Manchester setting lends an authentic sense of place that grounds the story.

Finding Emily isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel; it’s just aiming to entertain, and it succeeds. If you’re in the market for a date-night movie, Finding Emily is a great pick.
