Calling all Practical Magic fans! The sequel is here! Nearly three decades after the 1998 original, the Owens women are returning to the screen. Warner Bros. will release Practical Magic 2 in theaters on September 11, 2026, just in time for the fall season.

The story takes place twenty-five years after the original. The Owens family faces a new crisis when a discovery about their history and the true origin of their magic comes to light. The conflict centers on one of Sally’s daughters, who discovers hidden family secrets and begins to develop her own dark abilities. This leads to a multi-generational effort to break the curse that has affected the Owens bloodline for centuries. To do this, the women leave their Massachusetts home and travel to the United Kingdom to find the source of their magic and protect the next generation.

The biggest news is the return of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Bullock plays the practical, grounded Sally, while Kidman returns as her free-spirited sister Gillian. Both also serve as producers on this film. The two aunts are back as well, with Stockard Channing reprising Aunt Franny and Dianne Wiest returning as Aunt Jet. The pair once again play the women who raised Sally and Gillian and taught them about magic and self-reliance.

The sequel also adds several new cast members. Joey King plays Kylie Owens, Sally’s elder daughter, whose discoveries set the story in motion, while Maisie Williams, known from Game of Thrones, plays her younger sister, Antonia. Lee Pace plays Ian Wright, an academic who studies the history of magic and becomes a love interest for Sally, and Xolo Maridueña, known from Blue Beetle, plays Kylie’s love interest.

Susanne Bier directs the film. She is an Oscar-winning filmmaker who has worked with both leads before, directing Netflix’s Bird Box with Bullock and the series The Perfect Couple with Kidman. The script comes from Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original 1998 film, along with Succession writer Georgia Pritchett.

The sequel is based on The Book of Magic, Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel and the final book in her Practical Magic series. Hoffman has written several books set in the Owens family world, including the prequels The Rules of Magic and Magic Lessons, so readers who want more of the story can find it in print.

With a returning cast, a director familiar with both leads, and a story that expands on the original, Practical Magic 2 continues the Owens family’s story for longtime fans and new viewers alike.
