⭐⭐⭐⭐
I usually approach horror movies with low expectations, as so many rely on cheesy scares, over-the-top performances, and weak writing. That’s why Obsession, directed by Curry Barker, took me by surprise. It’s rare for a horror film to be entertaining on every level, but this one delivers. It’s funny when it should be, genuinely unsettling at the right moments, and strong enough to stay with you after it ends.
The plot centers on Bear (Michael Johnston), a shy and awkward music store employee who’s secretly in love with his co-worker, Nikki (Inde Navarrette). Desperate to win her over, he buys a mystical toy called the “One Wish Willow” from a new age occult store. When he breaks it and wishes Nikki to love him, his wish comes true — but with horrifying consequences.
Nikki’s transformation is terrifying. Her newfound love for Bear becomes an all-consuming obsession, driving her to increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior. From unsettling displays of devotion to moments of intense volatility, Nikki’s descent into madness is deeply unsettling.
Johnston is perfect as Bear, bringing a sweet, innocent, and vulnerable quality to the role. He looks the part and makes you root for him, even as his choices spiral out of control. Navarrette, meanwhile, is stunning as Nikki. She’s natural in the role, seamlessly shifting from a relatable, charming young woman to someone deeply disturbed and terrifying.
The supporting cast adds depth to the story, with Cooper Tomlinson as Bear’s skeptical friend, Ian, and Megan Lawless as the compassionate Sarah. Andy Richter rounds out the ensemble with a solid portrayal of Carter, the music store owner.
Taylor Clemons’ cinematography feels like a character, with muted colors and stark contrasts that bring the eerie atmosphere to life. His use of close-ups and lingering shots pulls you deep into the characters’ unraveling lives, making the tension and unease impossible to ignore.
The music and sound design are just as impressive. Rock Burwell’s score blends haunting melodies with sharp, jarring dissonance, heightening the story’s tension and emotional impact. Moments of silence and carefully crafted ambient noise are used brilliantly to build suspense and deliver truly shocking moments.
Obsession is a standout blend of horror and drama, offering a fresh take on the “be careful what you wish for” trope. With its powerful performances, innovative direction, and thought-provoking themes, it’s a must-watch for fans of psychological horror.
