⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard in a movie theater. The Roses had the entire audience in stitches—genuine, uncontrollable, spontaneous laughter! This film is a true comedy gem, delivering nonstop humor from start to finish. Without a doubt, it’s one of the best comedies I’ve seen in years. But before we dive into the review, let me clarify—this is not a shot-for-shot remake of The War of the Roses. It’s a modern reimagining of the original story, bringing a fresh twist to the classic tale.
The story follows Ivy and Theo Rose, played brilliantly by Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. They are a couple who seem to have it all—success, a beautiful home, and a seemingly perfect marriage. But beneath the surface, cracks are beginning to show. What starts as small, everyday arguments—like parenting styles and career frustrations—rapidly spirals into full-blown conflict. Theo, a once-successful architect, finds his career in shambles after a professional disaster, while Ivy’s restaurant business skyrockets, making her the family’s primary breadwinner. This shift in their dynamic creates tension, jealousy, and resentment, and their attempts to reconcile only seem to exacerbate the situation.
As their relationship deteriorates, bitterness gives way to open hostility. They begin sabotaging each other in increasingly ridiculous and over-the-top ways—ruining each other’s careers, turning their dream home into a battleground, and escalating their petty battles. The chaos reaches its peak during a housewarming party, where their pent-up frustrations explode in front of their friends.
The real magic of this movie, however, lies in the performances of Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. Olivia is a comedic genius. I’ve always known she was an incredible actress—she’s won an Oscar, after all—but her performance here? She’s on another level. She plays Ivy with such wit and charm, and her comedic timing is flawless. Every line she delivers, every look she gives, feels just perfect. She has this rare ability to make you laugh and break your heart all in the same scene. Honestly, I could watch her do anything, but seeing her in this role was a total treat.
And then there’s Benedict Cumberbatch. We all know he’s ridiculously talented, but I never expected him to be this funny. As Theo, he balances charm, frustration, and over-the-top antics with such natural ease. Plus, let’s not forget—he’s Benedict Cumberbatch. Handsome, charismatic, and just so much fun to watch. The chemistry between him and Olivia is phenomenal. They play off each other so well, and you can tell they’re having a blast. It’s the kind of dynamic that makes you want to rewatch the film to catch all their little moments together.
Kate McKinnon and Andy Samberg shine as Ivy and Theo’s hilarious friends, while the rest of the cast brings their own unique charm to the chaos. Visually, the film is a treat. Its vibrant colors, imaginative set, and camerawork capture every absurd moment, amplifying both the comedy and the energy.
The Roses is an absolute treat, blending humor and heartfelt moments into something truly special. It’s the kind of movie that will have you laughing out loud while keeping you hooked from start to finish. With incredible performances from Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, sharp writing, and great direction, it’s a perfect example of great storytelling. Do yourself a favor and catch it on the big screen—you won’t regret it!
