Peter Bogdanovich’s What’s Up, Doc? is a masterclass in laughter, chaos, and nostalgia all rolled into one. Released in 1972, this exuberant screwball comedy bursts onto the screen with an energy that grabs your attention from the first ridiculous mishap and never lets go. Anchored by standout performances from Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal, the film is a brilliant homage to classic Hollywood comedies, seamlessly blending clever humor with hilarious physical antics.
The story is delightfully absurd. Four plaid overnight bags—identical in appearance but containing wildly different contents—are unwittingly swapped among the film’s characters. One bag has secret government documents, another is brimming with priceless jewels, and one holds volcanic rocks of musical importance carried by a very serious musicologist named Dr. Howard Bannister (Ryan O’Neal). The last belongs to Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand), a quirky and chaotic whirlwind of a woman seemingly everywhere and in everyone’s way. These bag mix-ups set off a chain reaction of laugh-out-loud scenes.
Streisand’s sparkling wit and fearless performance are ideal for this role. She captivates every scene with a blend of charm and comedic timing. O’Neal, trading his usual leading-man mojo for a delightfully nerdy turn, finds the comedic sweet spot with his understated reactions to the madness around him. In her unforgettable debut, Madeline Kahn brings Howard’s shrill and controlling fiancée, Eunice, to life. She was so good that she was nominated for a Golden Globe. Overall, the cast shares impeccable timing that turns even small moments into laugh-out-loud highlights.
The film’s visual comedy shines under Bogdanovich’s confident direction. The chaotic chase sequences through San Francisco’s steep streets and winding landmarks are a highlight, blending slapstick brilliance with cinematic flair. The escalating absurdity of each scene is deliberate and well-executed, making the chaos feel controlled and never overwhelming. The playful writing, courtesy of Buck Henry, David Newman, and Robert Benton, keeps the dialogue sharp and the gags tightly paced, ensuring never dull moments.
It’s no surprise that audiences in 1972 flocked to this film. Grossing a whopping $66 million against a $4 million budget, What’s Up, Doc? was a massive hit, solidifying its place as one of the funniest movies of its time. Beyond its box office success, it remains a beloved classic, ranked among the funniest American movies by the American Film Institute. Its ability to charm and entertain hasn’t faded with time. Do yourself a favor and watch this film. It’s that good!
