Throuple (2024)

⭐⭐⭐

Throuple, directed by Greyson Horst, is an ambitious indie comedy-drama that boldly explores the complexities of modern relationships. The story follows Michael (Michael Doshier), a lonely gay New Yorker who unexpectedly finds himself in a romantic relationship with a married couple, Connor (Tommy Heleringer) and Georgie (Stanton Plummer-Cambridge). At the same time, Michael struggles with the fear of losing his best friend to her new girlfriend, adding an extra layer of emotional tension.

Michael Doshier delivers a heartfelt performance, capturing Michael’s vulnerability and longing for connection. His portrayal feels genuine, even when the script occasionally stumbles under the weight of its many subplots. The film deserves credit for its thoughtful exploration of polyamory, offering a fresh perspective on love and relationships. It highlights the importance of communication and self-discovery.

Some dynamics in the film feel chaotic. For instance, during a sleepover with his best friend (Bethlehem Million) and her girlfriend (Jess Gabor), Michael falls asleep in bed while snuggling with his best friend, leaving her girlfriend feeling excluded. While this moment adds an intriguing layer of tension, it also seems unrealistic. Additionally, the multi-layered storyline detracts from the main plot, making it difficult to connect with all the characters. Nevertheless, these moments demonstrate the film’s willingness to take risks and explore the complexities of human relationships.

The movie finds its rhythm as it progresses, offering moments of humor, tenderness, and introspection. The creative cinematography, including split-screen shots and photo montages, adds a unique visual style that keeps things engaging. The original music provides a catchy and emotional backdrop to the story.

While the script tries to juggle too much, the film’s sincerity and ambition shine through. It’s not a perfect movie, but it dares to tackle unconventional themes with heart and creativity. I give this film three stars.
