Frank’s Film Review: The Prince (2019)
⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5

Watching The Prince, directed by Sebastián Muñoz, is like stepping into a vivid and unrelenting world. It’s the story of Jaime (Juan Carlos Maldonado), a young man whose life takes a sharp turn when he commits a crime and finds himself in the harsh environment of a Chilean prison in the 1970s. As the story progresses, the layers slowly peel back to reveal the reasons behind his actions and how his time in prison shapes him. It’s a gradual build that comes to fruition by the film’s end.
Visually, the film is a masterpiece. Every scene is meticulously crafted, with lighting and shadows used so effectively that each frame feels like a piece of artwork. There’s a raw intimacy in how everything is portrayed, from the stark realities of prison life to the tender, fragile connections between the characters. The visuals feel as much a part of the story as the dialogue and performances.
Juan Carlos Maldonado delivers a remarkable performance as Jaime. His acting is incredibly believable, capturing the character’s vulnerability and complexity with authenticity. He brings a raw emotional depth to the role, making Jaime’s journey all the more compelling.
The Prince garnered international acclaim, winning the prestigious Queer Lion Prize at the Venice International Film Festival in 2019. Its bold storytelling and emotional depth earned it high praise across Europe, where critics lauded its ability to balance raw brutality with moments of tenderness.
Nudity plays a meaningful role in the film, and while it occasionally feels deliberately provocative, it ultimately enhances the story. It adds depth by making the characters’ relationships and dynamics feel more authentic, raw, and emotionally vulnerable.
If anything, The Prince is an experience. It challenges you, draws you in, and leaves you thinking once the film ends. Sebastián Muñoz has created something compelling here, and I think his fearlessness and vision deserve recognition. If you’re looking for a movie that explores the darker parts of human connection with beauty and depth, this one is well worth the rental price.
