Companion (2025)

Frank’s Film Review: Companion (2025)
⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5

Stepping into Companion with no idea what to expect was a decision I didn’t regret for a second. There’s a particular thrill in discovering a film entirely fresh, and Companion embraces that mystery with a narrative that surprises at every turn. Right out of the gate, the story delivers an unexpected twist that hooks you immediately, setting up a wild and emotional ride that keeps you locked in. And here’s the thing—I can’t tell you much more about the plot. To do so would give away a twist so brilliantly executed that it would rob the film of its power. This is one of those rare cases where the less you know, the better the experience. Trust me; it’s a story you need to discover for yourself.

Marketed as a horror film, Companion doesn’t entirely stay rooted in that genre. While it offers unsettling moments designed to make your skin crawl, the movie takes on a twisted blend of thriller and dark comedy. Its shifts in tone are sharp but expertly controlled, creating a movie that keeps you guessing—not just in terms of the plot, but about how you’re supposed to feel at any given moment. The dark humor sneaks up on you, adding unexpected levity without undercutting the weight of the larger story.

At the core of this captivating experience are the stellar performances, led by Sophie Thatcher at her absolute best. Thatcher’s portrayal of the protagonist is raw and deeply moving, seamlessly balancing vulnerability and strength in an entirely authentic manner. You feel her every decision, every doubt, every glimmer of resolve. Paired with Jack Quaid, who matches her with a grounded and multifaceted performance, the two bring an onscreen dynamic brimming with tension and emotion. Their exchanges feel natural yet charged, pulling the audience further into their characters’ world.

Director Drew Hancock’s vision deserves serious praise here. His ability to combine moments of subtle intimacy with scenes crackling with suspense is remarkable. He doesn’t rely on traditional horror staples but crafts a gripping atmosphere through pacing, visual flair, and a deliberate focus on the characters at the story’s heart. Hancock ensures every detail serves the narrative—from the tightly controlled tension to the unexpected twists of dark comedy punctuating the film.

Companion cannot be categorized, which makes it so memorable. Rather than settle into a single genre, the film embraces its contradictions, creating a unique experience that is slyly funny, unnervingly tense, and endlessly engaging. With standout performances from the cast and Drew Hancock’s keen eye for balancing suspense and black humor, Companion is a bold and refreshing entry into modern cinema that delivers on every level.
