Wonka

Frank’s Film Review: Wonka
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5

As a young boy, my favorite book was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I adored the film adaptation featuring Gene Wilder; his portrayal of Willy Wonka was perfect. When news broke about a new movie featuring a younger Willy Wonka, I was excited, hoping it would pay homage to the original.

The story centers on a young Willy who relocates to a bustling European city to follow his dream of becoming a chocolatier. However, he encounters challenges from three chocolate magnates and the cunning duo, Mrs. Scrubi and Bleacher. Along the way, he ends up imprisoned with Noodle and other characters in a basement laundry, seemingly with no hope of escape.

Timothee Chalamet looks fantastic in the iconic top hat as a young Willy Wonka. His performance is engaging, energetic, and utterly convincing. He is, without a doubt, the perfect choice for the role of the young chocolatier. If Gene Wilder were alive today, he would feel honored by Timothee’s portrayal.

Playing the role of “Noodle,” Calah Lane adds a gentle presence to the film, infusing it with depth and warmth. She completely stole my heart. Olivia Colman and Tom Davis play the villainous duo that enslaves the characters. Despite their wickedness, they captivate the audience and add a comedic touch to the film. They are hilarious.

I had high expectations for this reimagining of Willy Wonka, and I am delighted to say that the film exceeded those expectations. The emotional climax will move even the most stoic viewer to tears. This film is the perfect pick for the holiday season. Watch it and let yourself feel like a child once again.
